Trading the News: U.S. Consumer Price Index

What’s Expected:

Time of release: 08/15/2012 12:30 GMT, 8:30 EDT
Primary Pair Impact: EURUSD
Expected: 1.5%
Previous: 1.7%
DailyFX Forecast: 1.5% to 1.7%

Why Is This Event Important:

Consumer prices in the U.S. are expected to expand 1.5% in July after climbing 1.7% the month prior, and easing price pressures may heighten expectations for additional monetary support as the Fed maintains a cautious outlook for the world’s largest economy. At the same time, the core rate of inflation is expected to hold steady at 2.2% for the second consecutive month, and the stickiness in underlying inflation may instill a bullish outlook for the U.S. dollar as it limits the Fed’s scope to expand its balance sheet further. In turn, an in-line print across the CPI figures may produce whipsaw-like price action in the greenback, but we will be keeping a close eye on the core reading as it continues to hold above the 2% target for inflation.

The rebound in household spending paired with the uptick in wage growth may encourage businesses to pass on higher costs onto consumers, and a strong inflation print may encourage the Fed to soften its dovish tone for monetary policy as the recovery gradually gathers pace. However, as high unemployment along with the ongoing slack within the real economy dampens the outlook for private sector consumption, firms may continue to conduct heavy discounting to draw demands, and easing price pressures may weigh on the greenback as it fuels speculation for more quantitative easing.

Potential Price Targets For The Release
EURUSD_Trading_the_U.S._Consumer_Price_Report_body_ScreenShot089.png, EURUSD: Trading the U.S. Consumer Price Report

As the EURUSD fails to put in a close above the 50-Day SMA (1.2392), the pair appears to be carving out a lower high in August, and we may see the pair give back the rebound from July (1.2041) as the downward trend carried over from the previous year continues to take shape. However, there appears to be a bullish divergence in the relative strength index as the oscillator continues to move away from oversold territory, and a soft inflation print may produce a meaningful move above the 1.2400 figure as it fuels speculation for QE3. For a complete technical outlook including intra-day scalp targets, refer to yesterday's Winners/Losers report.

Trading the given event risk may not be as clear cut as some of our previous trades amid the deviation in market expectations, but a stronger headline and core print could pave the way for a long U.S. dollar trade as it dampens the scope for QE3. Therefore, if the inflation report tops forecast, we will need a red, five-minute candle following the release to establish a sell entry on two-lots of EURUSD. Once these conditions are met, we will set the initial stop at the nearby swing high or a reasonable distance from the entry, and this risk will generate our first objective. The second target will be based on discretion, and we will move the stop on the second lot to breakeven once the first trade hits its mark in an effort to lock-in our gains.
However, the ongoing weakness in the labor market paired with the persist slack within the real economy may continue to drag on price growth, and a soft inflation report may fuel expectations for more quantitative easing as the Fed keeps the door open to expand its balance sheet further. As a result, if price growth tapers off in July, we will carry out the same setup for a long euro-dollar trade as the short position mentioned above, just in the opposite direction.

June 2012 U.S. Consumer Price Index

Consumer prices in the world’s largest economy increased an annualized 1.7% for the second consecutive month in June, while the core rate of inflation advanced 2.2% during the same period to mark the slowest pace of growth since February. Indeed, the initial reaction was fairly muted, with the EURUSD maintain the narrow range ahead of the release, but the greenback struggled to hold its ground throughout the North American trade as the pair closed at 1.2292.

Forex: Ichimoku Clouds. Review of USDCHF

USD.CHF, H4
At the four-hour chart, the price broke through the lower bound of the cloud and rolled back to the horizontal area of Senkou Span A. The line Tenkan-Sen is above Kijun-Sen, and both lines have nearly merged. The line Chinkou Span is above the price line; current cloud is descending. Resistance levels are   Kijun-Sen (0.9740) and Senkou Span A (0.9735).

USD/CHF, D1
Let’s look at the daily chart. The Tenkan-Sen has crossed Kijun-Sen from below to above under the cloud, forming the pattern “Dead cross”. We got the second signal from the line Chinkou Span: intersection of the price chart from top to bottom. Current cloud is still ascending; however it is rapidly getting thinner. Support level is the upper bound of the cloud- the line Senkou Span A (0.9628).

XAU/USD: Long-term trend is positive

1.           Current trend of XAU/USD
At the beginning of this week the pair XAU/USD fell sharply. During the opening NY session on 13 August gold dropped from the level of 1622.00 to 1607.70. Now, after downward movement we can observe correction and upward surge; the price has consolidated at the level of 1615.00. Competent analysts and many large investors predict that gold will grow significantly in the near future.

2.          Important levels (Support and Resistance)
Currently, the pair has consolidated near initial resistance levels of 1616.00 and 161780. If the price breaks down these levels, further upward movement to the key resistance level of 1628.60 will be possible. If “bullish” sentiment continues to dominate, movement may reach the key resistance level of 1645.00, which are the local highs for the last three months. As for the long-term outlook for XAUUSD, many reputable publications and large investors believe that gold will significantly grow and the price of gold will increase up to 1900 USD for an ounce.
3.      Best entry/exit points
The most feasible scenario for today is correction and further growth.
It is advisable to place long positions with profit taking at the level of 1628.00 and further at1644.00.
It is also possible that pending orders will be placed with the limit on purchase around 1609.00 with profit taking at the level of 1628.00 and more risky level of 1644.00.

4.      Supporting facts
MACD indicator is in the positive area below the signal line and is directed downward, giving a signal for downtrend correction movement.
Long-term trend is positive that was secured by negative real rates. The consolidation period has been lasting for around a year and shall be completed soon. Gold will have one more growth lap, during which the price of gold will rise above 1900 USD per ounce.

Euro Receives Boost, but Gains May be Temporary

The euro saw upward movement against several of its main currency rivals yesterday, as hopes that the European Central Bank would move in to help debt stricken countries in the region boosted risk appetite in the marketplace. That being said, analysts were quick to warn that disagreements among euro-zone leaders about how to best combat the region's debt crisis could limit the common-currency's gains. Today, traders will want to pay attention to several potentially significant news events, including a German economic sentiment figure, and retail sales data out of the US. Any better than expected results could lead to risk taking and help the euro extend yesterday's gains.

Economic News:
USD - Dollar Takes Losses amid Increase in Risk Taking

The dollar fell during European trading yesterday, as an increase in risk taking caused investors to abandon safe-haven currencies. Against the Swiss franc, the greenback dropped more than 60 pips to reach as low as 0.9716 during the mid-day session. The GBP/USD shot up some 55 pips to peak at 1.5711, before staging a slight downward correction and stabilizing at the 1.5700 level. One notable exception to the dollar's bearish trend was against the JPY. After falling during Asian trading, the USD/JPY was able to rebound during the mid-day session to trade as high as 78.36.

Turning to today, dollar traders will want to note the results of the US Core Retail Sale, Retail Sales and PPI figures, all set to be released at 12:30 GMT. Analysts are forecasting all three indicators to come in well above their previous figures, which if true, could lead to risk taking in the marketplace and additional losses for the safe-haven greenback. That being said, traders will also want to pay attention to a batch of euro-zone news set to be released during morning trading. If any of the news indicates a further slowdown in the euro-zone economic recovery, the dollar could climb against its riskier currency rivals.

EUR - German Data Could Lead to EUR Volatility Today

Risk taking in the marketplace led to euro gains yesterday, even as analysts continued to warn investors that disagreements among euro-zone leaders could limit any bullish movement by the common-currency. The EUR/USD advanced close to 100 pips over the course of the day to reach as high as 1.2372. Against the yen, the euro moved up close to 90 pips before peaking at 96.89. A very mild downward correction brought the EUR/JPY to the 96.75 level toward the end of European trading.

Today, in addition to any announcements from the ECB regarding plans to lower Spanish and Italian borrowing costs, euro traders will also want to pay attention to the German ZEW Economic Sentiment, scheduled to be released at 09:00 GMT. Last week, the euro saw a significant downward correction following the release of disappointing German data. With today's news forecasted to come in at -19.2, which would indicate pessimism in the economic outlook for Germany, the euro could potentially reverse yesterday's gains during mid-day trading.

Gold - Gold Maintains Earlier Gains

Despite a downward correction during Asian trading yesterday, gold was largely able to maintain last Friday's gains as risk taking among investors boosted commodities and precious metals throughout the day. Gold spent much of the day range trading, bouncing back and forth between $1625 and ounce and $1619. By the end of the European session, prices were stable at the $1620 level.

Today, gold prices could see considerably more volatility as a batch of significant euro-zone and US data is set to be released. Traders will want to pay particular attention to the news out of the EU. Should any of it come in below the forecasted levels, investors may revert to safe-haven assets which could result in the price of gold falling.

Crude Oil - Oil Tumbles during Evening Trading

After steadily gaining throughout the European session due to increased tensions in the Middle East, the price of crude oil tumbled during evening trading yesterday. Crude advanced more than $1 a barrel to peak at $94.11 before staging a downward correction to trade as low as $92.09.

Today, the price of oil is forecasted to once again see heavy volatility, as a batch of significant US data is set to be released. If any of the indicators come in above expectations, risk taking could help oil recoup some of yesterday's losses. Furthermore, any positive US data could signal to investors that demand in the world's leading oil consuming country could go up, which may also help oil turn bullish.

Technical News

EUR/USD
A bullish cross appears to be forming on the weekly chart's MACD/OsMA, indicating that upward movement could occur in the coming days. That being said, most other technical indicators show this pair range trading, making a definitive trend hard to predict. Taking a wait and see approach may be the best choice at this time.
GBP/USD
Most long term technical indicators place this pair in neutral territory, meaning that a definitive trend is hard to predict at this time. Taking a wait and see approach may be the best option, as a clearer picture is likely to present itself in the near future.
USD/JPY
The Bollinger Bands on the weekly chart are narrowing, signaling that a price shift could occur in the coming days. Additionally, the Williams Percent Range on the weekly chart is currently about to drop into oversold territory, indicating that the shift could be bullish. Going long may be the right approach for this pair.
USD/CHF
Both the Williams Percent Range and the Relative Strength Index on the weekly chart are very close to crossing into overbought territory, signaling that downward movement could occur in the coming days. Traders will want to closely watch these two indicators. If they do signal that the pair is overbought, it may be a good time to open short positions.

The Wild Card

USD/MXN
A bullish cross on the daily chart's Slow Stochastic indicates that upward movement could occur in the near future. In addition, the Williams Percent Range on the same chart has crossed into oversold territory. Forex traders may want to open long positions for this pair ahead of a possible upward breach.

EUR/USD Forecast August 14, 2012, Technical Analysis

The EUR/USD pair had a bullish session for the Monday trading day, but it did manage to give up quite a bit of its gains in the end. The 1.2350 level continues to hold as resistance, and as such we think that selling this pair may be possible even in these prices.

EUR/USD Forecast August 14, 2012, Technical Analysis

Should also be noted that the pair is forming a rising wedge, and that is normally a bearish sign. We would become aggressively short of this pair if we manage to break the lows from the Monday session, and especially so if we manage to break the lows of the Friday session as it would not only show a break of a rising wedge, but also the support that we found at the 1.2250 level area.

As for buying the Euro, we see absolutely no reason to do so as the Europeans are still dawdling when it comes to the financial crisis. In fact, we think that 1.25 will simply be far too extremely resistive for the pair to rise above it. We are looking for rallies to sell, or even a breakdown as mentioned above to do so as well.
